What is Fibrous Plastering ?

Fibrous plastering is a form of precast plasterwork. The plaster casts are reinforced with open mesh hessian scrim and strengthen with timber laths. This results in strong casts that are light in weight. Another advantage of Fibrous plastering is the saving in cost when reproducing several similiar types of moulded work which can be cast from the same mould. These casts can be prepared in a workshop, as the building progressed separately. When the appropriate stage of the building is reached the casts can be fixed by means of zinc screws to timber joists and the joints wadded with scrim and stopped (filled in) and made good with plaster.  Quoted from Plastering -  JB Taylor - 5th Edition.

In the workshop, fibrous plasterer runs the half dome model and getting ready to make casts from it.

Guild of the Traditional Plastering Craft

Ryan Swart, Director of R.S Plaster Mouldings has been deservedly awarded the Guild of the Traditional Plastering Craft. After the initial application few years ago, Philip Gaches - the acting Master and his Panel were satisfied with Ryan’s work with restoration of plaster mouldings (Heritage) and confident that his work is at high standard and good customer services.

One of England’s finest ornamental plasterer, Keith Langton, who is also the member of the Guild, did the honours to present Ryan the certification. This meant the world to Ryan. Ryan’s progression with his plastering craft does not stop there, will continue to make progress and have “always learning” sort of attitude as every job have its own challenges, however he has maintained excellent network of finest plasterers in United Kingdom and Ireland to pass on the knowledge. Once a year there’s a gathering of traditional plasterers local and abroad  to showcase their skills and share on the knowledge.

How is decorative coving made...

You may wonder how coving is made? Many think that they are only made in China and shipped to the U.K. in large quantities.....Far from it, Coving is originally made by the use of casting plaster (Plaster of Paris), hessian and laths. The process started in UK at 19th century.

They are hand made in our workshop using our master copy to create a cast. (Master copies are also hand made).

See pictures below for each of these processes.
